Artist Statement
I begin my paintings and drawings with either journaling or automatic writing of my emotional experience growing up female in the Southeastern US and how it has affected me.
Suppression, being raised female in a male dominated society immersed in organized, patriarchal religion, far right political pressures, and societal oppression to behave like a lady are what drive the outcome.
Using writing or drawing as the skeleton of the work, and being inspired by the techniques of the Persian miniaturists, I then go back into it with drawing and painting to expand my initial feelings of helplessness and anxiety into something transformative and empowering.
